The Institute for the Management of Information System (IMIS)

 

About IMIS

IMIS is an accrediting body, run its own Examination Syllabus leading towards the IMIS qualification, which is recognised and respected in the field of information systems management around the world. There are currently 12,000 students and accredited members in over 50 countries.

Course Structure

The Institute for the Management of Information Systems is the leading independent professional association for both users and developers of today's information technologies.

IMIS is known for its focus on the practical issues involved in the application and management of information and communication technologies. These issues are now moving into the forefront of public awareness and debate, demonstrating the importance of the work of the Institute and its members.

The IMIS Examination Syllabus, established in 1978 and unaffiliated with any vendor or industry body, leads to one of the most highly sought after and respected IS professional qualifications in over 50 countries around the world.

Foundation Diploma

The foundation Diploma is suitable for people who want to work with computers and thus need some appropriate education. Completion of all the modules below will lead to the IMIS Foundation Diploma and will satisfy the entry requirements to the IMIS Diploma.

Aim:
  1. Understand how to access and present information for the business / organisational environment.
  2. Have an understanding of the communication process in the business context.
  3. Understand the basic conventions of written English as it relates to the business context.
  4. Have an awareness of the communication process within organisations
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of organisational structure and functions
  6. Understand the importance of cohesive working relationships within organisations and in particular the significance of group working
  7. Have an awareness of the impact and usage of information Technology on business and organisational communication activities

Diploma

The syllabus across all levels is based on four themes, which are developed within and across the levels. Concepts, principles, methods and ideas may be introduced at one level and be expanded in a conceptually more demanding next level. Modules may be based predominantly on one theme but of necessity topics will be integrated. The principal theme, Management of Information Systems (IS), includes the study of IS and decision making at all levels in organisations together with the management of IS from the development of business and IS strategies through to eventual information system obsolescence. Structural and organisational issues regarding the Management of the Information Systems Development Process are included. The Diploma course is natural progression from the foundation level.

Aims:

  1. An understanding of business organisations in terms of types and structures, and the information systems needed to enable those business organisations to operate successfully within their environment.
  2. The knowledge to enable them to engage in the processes of development, implementation and operation of technology-based information systems.
  3. An understanding of the technologies and tools that may be used to support those information systems and their development.
  4. Recognition of the need for professional standards together with the knowledge of legal issues and social responsibilities required in their work as Information Systems professionals. Appropriate transferable skills.

Higher Diploma

The syllabus across all levels is based on four themes, which are developed within and across the levels. The principal theme, Management of Information Systems (IS), includes the study of IS and decision making at all levels in organizations together with the management of IS from the development of business and IS strategies through to eventual information system obsolescence.
Structural and organisational issues regarding the Management of the Information Systems Development Process are included. The Higher Diploma course is advancement from the Diploma level.


Aims:
  1. An in depth knowledge of the use of information systems to support and promote management decisions in the context of the modern work environment and the ability to apply such knowledge to address management related issues.
  2. An understanding and ability to apply appropriate techniques and tools within a given approach to information systems development, taking into account the historical context.
  3. An opportunity to demonstrate how to apply appropriate technological systems and infrastructures to support a business information systems solution.
  4. An understanding and ability to evaluate and apply appropriate techniques, which achieves successful project management and implementation that is socially desirable and legally compliant.

Entry Requirements


Foundation Diploma

No formal qualifications are required but applicants should demonstrate competence in English by the attainment of one of the following:

  • British Council - Intermediate Certificate in English/Upper Advanced Certificate in English
  • LCCI - English for Business (EFB) 1st or 2nd level
  • Pitman/City and Guilds - English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)/English for Business and Communication
  • English Language competency of IELTS 6.0 (5.0 to 6.0 - 3 months pre-English course required)

Diploma

  • Successful completion of the Foundation Diploma level examinations.
  • GCSE (or equivalent) with passes in 4 subjects, including Mathematics and English at grades C and above (or equivalent).
  • Candidates of 21 years of age and over with two years' work experience relevant to computing or a related field will also be eligible. An employer reference will be required.
  • Candidates of 19 years of age and over may be admitted on receipt of a letter, from the college where the student is registered to study for IMIS qualifications, attesting to their suitability to study at this level.

Higher Diploma

  • Successful completion of the Diploma level examinations.
  • BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Computing.
  • BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in a related subject with a significant computing element.
  • GCSE (or equivalent) with passes in 5 subjects including Mathematics and English. 'A' Level in a computing subject and one other 'A' Level. Two passes at 'AS' level may be considered in place of one 'A' level pass.
  • Other appropriate educational qualifications deemed equivalent to the IMIS Diploma level examinations.
  • Candidates that are 21 years of age or over with four years' appropriate work experience relevant to computing or a related field may also be considered
