About NVQ

NVQs are based on national standards for various occupations.

The standards say what a competent person in a job could be expected to do. As you progress through the course, you compare your skills and knowledge with these standards as you learn, so you can see what you need to do to meet them.

Qualifications

The School of Vocational Studies of the LVC offers national vocational qualifications courses in Health Care and Social Care.

The following Health and Social Care courses offered:

NVQ Level 2 (Adults)

The Level 2 qualification is designed for staffs who deliver physical, emotional or enabling care under the supervision of a colleague who holds overall responsibility. This qualification would be particularly relevant to you if you work as a home care assistant or residential care assistant.

Duration: 1 year

Prices:
Local Fee: £1,800.00
International Fee: £2,200.00

Summary

You are assessed in six areas, four of which are mandatory:
  • Communicate with and complete records for individuals (HSC21)
  • Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals (HSC22)
  • Develop you knowledge and practice (HSC23)
  • Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and well-being of individuals (HSC24)
Then there are wider ranges of other areas to select from, for example:
  • Carry out and provide feedback on specific plan of care activities
  • Support individuals to access and use information
  • Support individuals to eat and drink
  • Personal hygiene and personal care
  • Support individuals in their daily living
  • Supporting individuals to make journeys
  • Support individuals to meet their domestic and personal needs
  • Support individuals to access and participate in recreational activities

Delivery:

2 days a week (1 day underpinning knowledge/1 day portfolio development).
2 days a week work experience (paid or voluntary)
This level 2 qualification will enable you to progress to level 3 Care.


NVQ Level 3 (Adults)

It is designed for staff delivering care and support, often without direct supervision or working on their own, for example in a user's home. You will usually have some degree of responsibility and autonomy for your work.

Duration: 1 year

Prices: Local Fee: £2,300.00 International Fee: £2,700.00

Summary

The Level 3 qualification has links to the Care level 2 award but reflects a higher level of responsibility and specialisation. At this level you may also have supervisory responsibility for other members of staff and might be involved in a number specialist tasks.

You will be assessed in 8 areas, four of which are core units:
  • Promote effective communication for and about individuals (HSC31)
  • Promote, monitor and maintain, safety and security in the working environment (HSC32)
  • Reflect on and develop your practice (HSC33)
  • Promote choice well being and the protection of individuals (HSC35)
Then there are wider ranges of other areas to select from, for example:
  • Contribute to planning, monitoring and reviewing the delivery of services for individuals
  • Support individuals to develop and maintain social network and relationships
  • Support the social, emotional and identity of individuals
  • Contribute to the protection of individuals from harm and abuse
  • Provide individuals with the framework to manage challenging behaviours
  • Contribute to care planning and review.
  • Support individuals to access and use service and individuals.
  • Support individuals to live at home
  • Administer medication to individuals
  • Support individuals through bereavement
  • Support individuals through the dying process
Delivery:
2 days a week (1 day underpinning knowledge/1 day portfolio development). 2 days a week work experience (paid or voluntary)

NVQ Level 4 (Adults)

It is designed to reflect the work of candidates who undertake Health and Social Care activities at Level 4 working with service users/carers.

Duration: 1 year

Price: £1,500.00

Summary

The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills and competences of candidates in the workplace.

The qualification is about the management and delivery of physical, emotional or enabling care to clients/service users. The candidate will be managing and delivering care in support of others, and will be accountable in the area of practice.

Candidates will be working without direct supervision or on their own, such as in a clients/service users own home. Candidates will have autonomy, and will be required to make decisions within boundaries and limits agreed with their team.

Course content
To achieve a full EDI Level 4 NVQ in Health and Social Care, candidates must achieve 8 units made up of 4 Core units (including the choice of specialist route) and 4 Optional units.


Core units:

  • Use and develop methods and systems to communicate record and report.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of healthy and safe practices in the working environment.
  • Take responsibility for the continuing professional development of self and others.
  • Develop practices which promote choice, well-being and protection of all individuals.

Optional units:

There are a range of optional units available depending upon work role and work setting.

Delivery:
Learners work with as assessor individually, completing activities and assessments for each unit. Your assessor will also observe you carrying out practical tasks during your normal working hours in order that you can meet the requirements of each unit. Like all NVQ's this qualification is competence-based. This means that it is linked to a person's ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with their work
Work-placement:
1 year paid work-placement will be provided with not less than the national minimum wage in England. The work-placement may start 1 month after the commencement of the course at LVC. Upon sucessful completion with minimum credit grade, the student may be placed for a definitive position.

Entry Requirements

Who can take NVQ?

NVQs are available to adults and young people alike. You can take NVQs if:
— You are employed
— You are studying at college and have a part-
    time job or access to a work placement

When new candidates start an NVQ, the assessor will usually help them to:
  • Identify what they can do already
  • Agree on the standard and level they are aiming for
  • Analyse what they need to learn
  • Choose and agree on activities that would allow them to learn what they need.
