BTEC Qualifications

About BTEC

The Business & Technician Education Council (BTEC) was a subdegree-conferring council in the United Kingdom until 1996, when its functions were transferred to Edexcel. The council offered further and higher education awards, particularly to polytechnics, and in particular the BTEC Nationals and BTEC Higher Nationals awards which remain prominent. It is not to be confused with BTech.

BTEC qualifications are undertaken in vocational subjects ranging from Business to Animal Care. They have an equivalence to other qualifications such as the GCSE and the A Level but a particular difference is that they tend to be based on practical work or coursework rather than timed examinations.

Career Prospects

Business

The first choice is for students who have a strong Higher National Diploma profile and who can, through their personal statement and reference, provide evidence of the appropriate level of motivation and commitment. Each year, a significant number of students internationally do progress from the HND onto the Business and Management degree but please note that progression is not automatic and is dependent on the factors outlined above and the number of places available.

Health and Social Care

This course aims to provide a stepping stone towards further academic qualifications, including professional qualifications, and/or a future career within the health and social care sector. Graduate of this course can progress to year three of the ‘BA (Hons) Heath and Social Care’ degree with many UK universities.

Students can apply for various jobs in the healthcare industry such as healthcare analysts, healthcare planners and management or administrative oriented roles. The diploma also enables candidates to enter professional training at advanced levels in areas such as nursing, midwifery or professions allied to medicine such as occupational therapy or physiotherapy.
